Sotheby's Beauty & Beast 1991 Production Background animation cel Disney Belle
16-field Beauty and the Beast (1991) movie production background, with a Disney created matching cel overlay, and matching production background cutout overlay. This is from the memorable opening sequence in which Belle strolls through the town singing, with the townsfolk and Gaston joining in the song too. The background is a beautifully detailed watercolor of an old French village that looks like the Beauty & the Beast section of Magic Kingdom. The background and background overlay were actually used in the film, while the cel of the buxom lady, the butcher, and his wife is on a Disney hand-painted cel with a special Sotheby's seal to complete the setup. The image of Belle is a cutout added to the setup for presentation purposes. The frame is fittingly wooden and rustic looking. Somewhat risque scenes such as this are rarely seen in any Disney films, and never seen in the more modern Disney films. With the recent change in standards, and the censoring of classics like Dumbo and Peter Pan, images like this may never come out of Disney again. Since the moving images in Beauty & the Beast were done by computer, no production cels from Beauty & the Beast were ever created. The closest thing you could get was a Production Background with a cel created by Disney from the original drawing. Framed dimensions are 21.5" x 17.5". "And by the way, they're real, and they're spectacular" -Sidra (Seinfeld).
